Tom Barrett, Wisconsin’s #1 Polluter, Brings His Trash to Michigan

Wauwatosa – Scott Walker campaign manager Keith Gilkes today released the following statement on the disturbing news that the raw sewage dump from Tom Barrett, Wisconsin’s biggest polluter, has now reached the state of Michigan.  Garbage, sewage, and syringes have washed onto Michigan’s shoreline.

 

“Today we received news that Tom Barrett’s big dump of 8.2 billion gallons of sewage into Lake Michigan – after Barrett promised in 2004 “No raw sewage dumping” – has now reached the state of Michigan,” said Gilkes.  “Tom Barrett’s broken promises to the people of Wisconsin are now bleeding over to our neighbors.  Just like Jim Doyle, we can’t trust Tom Barrett to do what he says he will.” 

 

Today’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Reports that: ??‘Michigan officials are warning residents that syringes and other household trash washing onto beaches could be coming from sewer dumps from the flooding in Milwaukee three weeks ago.

 

"We've got lots of trash and medical waste washing up on the shores of Lake Michigan," said Mary Dettloff, a spokeswoman for Michigan's Department of Natural Resources and Environment….The Michigan agency says the syringes could carry harmful bacteria and viruses capable of spreading diseases that include hepatitis or AIDS.” More than 2 billion gallons of untreated sewage and storm water poured from Milwaukee-area sewers into waterways on this side of the lake after the July 22.”
