Continues to Advocate Using $810 Million High Speed Rail Money to Fix Roads and Bridges
Wauwatosa – Scott Walker, Milwaukee County executive and candidate for governor, today called on Governor Doyle to immediately fix the problems with the Hoan Bridge, and announced that if elected governor, he would make fixing roads and bridges, not building trains, his top priority. Currently, both Governor Doyle and Mayor Barrett have advocated spending over $810 million in taxpayer money to build a high-speed rail line from Milwaukee to Madison. Walker strongly opposes the project, and has said that if elected he would not only halt the train, but would work with the Wisconsin delegation to reallocate the money for roads and bridges.
“Governor Doyle should immediately fix the Hoan Bridge, and stop kicking road and bridge repairs down the road for the next governor to deal with,” said Walker. “Doyle’s irresponsible $2 billion raid on the state transportation fund is not only blowing a hole in our state’s budget, but is now threatening the Hoan Bridge.
“It’s outrageous that Governor Doyle and Mayor Barrett are trading in the needs of our roads, our bridges, the Zoo Interchange and now the Hoan Bridge, to play with an $810 million fancy toy train. As governor, I will not only end all raids on the state transportation fund, but I will halt this boondoggle train dead in its tracks and will work with the Wisconsin delegation to reallocate the funds to go to our roads and bridges instead.”
Walker has time and again called for an end to the train and for appropriate funding to go to the Hoan Bridge, the Zoo Interchange, and other road projects.
