BRIGHTON - Governor hopeful Scott Walker talked about food, Jimmy Buffett and property taxes, among other things, while visiting the Kenosha County Dairy Breakfast at the Crane farm in Brighton Saturday.

Walker, the Republican Milwaukee County executive and tea party supporter, at one point noted that a woman enjoying a morning meal was wearing a Buffett shirt.

"Are you a Parrothead?" she wondered, referring to what's supposed to be a complimentary label for the singer's fans. No, said Walker, although he has seen the "Margaritaville" performer in concert. "I guess I'm a quasi-Parrothead," he laughed.

"Have you eaten yet?" another woman asked. He joked that he was kicked out of line, apparently because he was taking too much time and selecting too much food.

But he shifted to more serious topics when asked about dairy and farming support in a Walker administration. He said he:

- Wants a stronger cap on property tax levies to help farmers and all citizens with tax relief.

- Would fend off challenges to the "use value" assessment approach, which taxes property on its use rather than its potential value if developed, a system that benefits farmers.

- Likes incentives for investments in farm technology.

Walker also said farmers and others could be helped by removing the state tax on health savings accounts, which offer some income tax benefits when paying for health care.

Walker and his campaign workers stopped at the breakfast to greet voters and seek signatures on nominating papers. The state's Republican Party endorsed him at its recent convention, but fellow Republican Mark Neumann said he will continue campaigning for the state's top elected post. That would lead to one of them being chosen in the Sept. 14 primary.

The winner is expected to run against Milwaukee mayor and Democratic nominee Tom Barrett in the Nov. 2 general election. Incumbent Democrat Gov. Jim Doyle has decided not to seek re-election.
