Former U.S. Rep. Mark Green endorsed Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker for governor on Monday at an event in Green Bay.

Green and Walker are both Republicans and ran against each other in the Republican primary for governor four years ago before Walker dropped out. Green lost in the general election to Democrat Jim Doyle.

Ina prepared statement, Green said that "Scott Walker's common sense and commitment to fiscal discipline are exactly what Madison needs to get our state back on track and our economy growing again."

Walker called Green a "tremendous public servant and friend."

Four years ago, things weren't so amiable. During the 2006 campaign, Walker ran a radio commercial critical of Green, lumping him with Doyle. He claimed both men had backed away from pledges to hold the line on property taxes. Green said it was a lie and attacked the radio spot as "sleazy."

Walker bowed out of the 2006 race in late March. That left Green and Doyle in a two-man race.

In a statement, Mark Neumann, the other Republican in the race, said: "At the end of the day, folks from across Wisconsin will decide this election. I'm focused on communicating my conservative message to those folks - the message of cutting spending and lowering taxes to create jobs."

Green was a member of Congress from 1999 to 2007 and served as U.S. ambassador to Tanzania.
