The race to be Wisconsin's next governor picked up steam on the Republican side Monday.

One of the leading candidates launched a commercial, while another kicked off a statewide tour in De Pere.

Scott Walker's Brown Bag Tour

In the next several months, Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker will travel the state to meet with workers and deliver what he calls his Brown Bag Guide to Government.

"Don't spend more money than you have. Smaller government is better, and people, the people here create jobs, not the government. That's probably the most important message. A lot of politicians, including some Republicans, believe that government creates jobs," Walker said.

Walker says right now there are more government jobs in Wisconsin than manufacturing jobs.

He used Rol-Tec Manufacturing in De Pere as an example of a business being hurt by high taxes, and he touts his eight years as county executive as proof he can find creative ways to improve the state's economy.

"We reduced our debt, we reduced the size of our workforce, improved our bond rating, did it without proposing tax increases, and when the State had a budget deficit we actually had a surplus."

Walker calls himself "frugal" and says he packs a brown bag lunch to work every day and drives a 12-year-old car with more than 100,000 miles.
