With one push, a Wisconsin Republican is moving into two areas typically associated with democrats: young voters and technology.

Scott Walker, the Milwaukee County Executive running for governor, held a fundraising drive at college campuses around the state today. Students were able to get information on Walker, view his Web site and donate money to his campaign, all fairly typical practices. But Walker’s campaign is going beyond the norm.

Mimicking the success Barack Obama had during the presidential election in 2008, Walker supporters can create their own Walker page at www.myscottspot.org, or connect through Facebook. With personal sites, supporters can connect with others around the state, find out about or organize their own events, or share information.

“They can utilize the campaign from the comfort of their own home,” said Patrick Testin, chair of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point College Republicans.

By venturing into social networking media, where 66 percent of 18- to 29-year-olds have a profile, compared with 18 percent of those 30 and older, according to a Pew Internet & American Life Project survey during the 2008 campaign, Walker is moving in a new direction for Republican campaigns.
