Republican gubernatorial candidate Scott Walker said if elected he would hold growth in state taxes and spending to at least the rate of inflation.

That means that in the GOP primary both Walker, the Milwaukee County executive, and his opponent and former congressman Mark Neumann are making a similar pledge.

Speaking to the Wisconsin State Journal editorial board last week, Walker said he was unsure what the exact tax target should be but confirmed it should be below the rate of inflation.

Driven in part by the slide in gasoline prices, inflation fell by 1.5 percent in August over the prior year.

"I think there should be targets," Walker said. "As to what that exact amount is, I think that's part of what the dialogue's going to be over the next year of the election."

Walker said that as governor he would pursue conservative social positions on issues such as abortion but that his main focus would be on creating jobs.

"One of the clear tests we're going to ask each and every day is, is what we're doing going to help someone create or retain more jobs in Wisconsin? And if it's not, we've got to set that aside," Walker said.
