MANITOWOC — With continuing depressed domestic and global markets, Manitowoc Crane has laid off 80 hourly production employees, effective today.
Dennis Rooney, vice president of human resources for America's region of The Manitowoc Company, said about 870 employees continue to work at Manitowoc Crane and its production facility on South 30th Street.
Rooney said no salaried workers were part of the layoff, one of several in 2009. He said the company wants to retain the engineers responsible for crane innovations crucial to sales success currently and in the future when the construction sector and the world economy rebound.
Last week, company officials reported an $18.1 million loss for the second quarter with sales of $1.03 billion in its crane and foodservice segments, down 13.1 percent from the second quarter of 2008. Net sales in the crane segment were down 39 percent from the second quarter of 2008.
