The ebb and flow of the airline industry is creating much-needed competition for Milwaukee-area travelers.

AirTran Airways, which two years ago had only a minor presence at General Mitchell International Airport, has captured the second-largest market share in Milwaukee for the first time and is gaining on long-time leader, Midwest Airlines.

AirTran’s market share at Mitchell was 24.3 percent in June, the most recent period for which figures are available, up four points from May. AirTran’s share surpassed the 22.5 percent combined market share for June by Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines. Atlanta-based Delta purchased Northwest in a $2.9 billion deal completed in October 2008.

Market share is defined as total passengers boarding flights.
