WALKER UNDER ATTACK

Walker Targeted By Good Old Anonymous:

>> Opponents Prepare to Spent $1 Million Against Walker! <<

“She has said it would take $1 million to run an effective campaign
against Walker. He spent more than $600,000 in his 2004 race.”
– Milwaukee Journal Sentinel (12/1/07)

Doyle Gets Involved In Race: Headlines Event For Taylor

Taylor misstatement: “He [Walker] even failed to approach Senator Taylor this past budget cycle when she was on the Joint Finance Committee in the State Legislature.”

Truth:
As County Executive, Walker sent 146 letters to members of the State Legislature, 33 of which were joint letters with Board Chairman Lee Holloway.

Taylor misstatement:
Taylor has repeatedly commented during public forums that Walker is closing the parks, including trying to close the King and Kosciuszko community centers, as well as causing a deterioration in service.

Truth:
Under Walker’s leadership, not a single park has closed. In fact, when the parks department suggested closing the community centers listed above, Walker funded those programs in his budget.

The truth is that Walker is looking for innovative ways to fund and preserve our parks. His plan to restructure the parks system would save taxpayers millions, as well as add nearly 20,000 labor hours during times of peak usage in the parks. He will also continue to build private partnerships, such as the Starbucks at Red Arrow Park.

Taylor misstatement: “Raising fares and cutting routes-have made our public transit inefficient and cost-ineffective.”

Truth:
In 2008, regular riders of the bus continue to pay the same amount as they did in 2007 (weekly passes did not go up). And even though the transit system originally proposed eliminating a series of routes, Walker put them back in his 2008 proposed budget. In fact, Scott Walker has not vetoed out changes to the transit system that were included in the various versions of the county budget passed by the County Board in previous years.

WALKER: COMMITTED TO TRANSIT

County Executive Walker remains committed to enhancing our transportation system and to providing access to all who rely on this important service. Raising taxes is not the solution to fixing issues with the bus system. We need to examine the cost of maintaining the system, as well as address a stable form of long-term support from the state.

Walker's 2008 budget does not raise the fare of a weekly bus pass from the 2007 rate and he maintains the bus routes included in county board version of the budget. He also supports using the $91.5 million in federal money to enhance our current system and to develop a regional form of transportation that will grow this community and attract employers – not develop a streetcar system that would circle within 3 miles of downtown Milwaukee.
